Day 2: Playing with Vampire Mythology

Hi everyone –

Today is the official release date for Night Walker in Mass-Market!!! WOOT!!! (Even though Amazon and Barnes & Noble released it early… J)

To celebrate, I’m hosting Day 2 of our Vampire Author blog hop! One Lucky commenter will receive an eBook copy of Night Walker! Don’t forget to visit all the blogs this week and comment for a chance to win the Amazon gift card too…

Playing with Vampire Mythology

One of the most interesting things about reading and writing vampire romance is there are so many fun aspects of vampire mythology with which authors can play. Daywalkers or nightwalkers? Beating heart or not? Fanged or fangless? Cold or warm? The list goes on and on. Here, six vampire romance authors to die for share which mythological aspects they used in their latest vampire stories…

Laura: In my Vampire Warrior Kings series, I made the vampires unable to walk in the sun, have beating hearts, able to ingest a minimal amount of human food but dependent on blood, and have supernatural strength, speed, and senses. The vampires’ world also offers a new mythology in which seven remaining vampire kings, who are allied with a handful of elite humans in the know, reign over their respective regions of the world and fight against an evil legion of ancient immortal enemies. Seduced by the Vampire King, book 2 in the series, releases June 1!

Lisa: I wanted a west coast vampire, and the European Dracula mythos just didn’t feel right on the California coast, so I started researching ancient native cultures and ended up with the Mayans. In Mayan Mythology there are four gods called, Becabs, who uphold the four corners of the world. With all the history of Mayan blood sacrifices, I wondered if maybe those four immortal gods needed the blood to survive. Gradually my research into the Mayans became my new vampire-like race of Night Walkers.

Laurie: Because I suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder caused by the lack of sunlight in the winter, I asked myself, what if my lethargy isn’t always because of a lack of sun? What if I’d been visited by a vampire and I just didn’t have any recollection? When I thought about why vampires need blood, I realized it’s because they need our energy. Their bodies are unable to convert UV light into energy like humans can, so they must take it from us—by drinking our lifeblood and absorbing it through physical touch. Although sunlight doesn’t kill them, it does make them very weak and vulnerable, and creates intense cravings, so they generally try to avoid it…but they’re not always successful.

Caridad: For The Vampire’s Consort I went with the mythos that I had created for THE CALLING/REBORN vampire novel series. Vampires can have “keepers” who can live longer than humans by the giving of a “keeper’s kiss” by the vampire to his consort. My vampire elders can go out in weak sunlight and all my vampires have a heart beat. They are generally cold in their human form, but grow warm when they release their inner vampire.

Elisabeth: I stuck with the classic creature of the night mythos, and my vampires have fangs. They are not, however, undead. In King of Darkness vampires are an alternate species and have learned to blend in with humans for survival. They do live for hundreds if not thousands of years, but not forever. They must drink blood from each other in order to regain lost power, which allows me to play later in the series with possible complications should a vampire fall in love with a creature of another species.

Joyee: In the Marius Brothers world, specifically, my new book Maverick Danker, I like to play with the mythology. The vampires are born as they are, drink blood, but still eat food, are not cursed, can walk in the sun, and are so far from evil that their honor rules every decision they make. They have beating hearts while still having retractable fangs and their warm and not only in body temperature. In this book I wanted to show that they weren’t the typical, elitist vampires who look down on all paranormals. They band together as a species to help when some are lost and need a new home.

Psyched for your visit at FANGS, WANDS & FAIRY DUST. Would love to enter the tour contest, but have most of the books. The GC would be a huge help to the battered budget. But you know where I am if I win may not be able to reply.

    1. Lisa Kessler May 16, 2012 at 12:00 am

I’m looking forward to visiting your blog too!!! 🙂

I love how much variation there is with vampire novels. They remind me of different breeds of dogs — they can be so totally different — yet still be instantly recognizable for what they are. It was great to see a comparison of novels.

    1. laurakayeauthor May 15, 2012 at 8:59 am

I totally agree, Cara! Thanks for stopping by! 🙂

    2. Lisa Kessler May 16, 2012 at 12:01 am

You nailed it Cara!!! I think werewolf mythology is the same way… They can be so different, yet you can still feel the core werewolf….

  13. Catherine May 15, 2012 at 5:53 am

I didn’t see my first attempt at a post come through…SO, I’ll try again! It’s intriguing to me the different mythologies that are out there. I guess it’s necessary, too, so that the vampire genre doesn’t get stale or repetitive. Lisa…I love your West Coast vamp vibe with the Mayan influence. What a different twist. I’m not up on all of the vampire lore but I’m betting I’m going to learn some this week.

Lisa…I also was a “giver” on World Book Night. I gave out Orson Scott Card’s Ender’s Game. I wen’t back to the class last week and led a book discussion. It was SO much fun. I’ll definitely be doing it again next year.

This is why I love paranormal romances. The author takes a species and makes them her own. I was so happy when PR’s became popular, I love reading about different takes on vampires. It is so much fun…LOL
Thank you for the chance to win wonderful books. I look forward to reading them all.

    1. laurielondon May 15, 2012 at 10:07 am

I agree! I love reading everyone’s “take” on the vampire mythos too. I know for me, I took the elements that intrigued me the most and twisted them to suit the story world I created. Thanks for stopping by today and, Lisa, thanks for hosting Day Two!

    2. laurielondon May 15, 2012 at 10:10 am

I’m not seeing my reply, so I hope this doesn’t end up being a duplicate.
I agree! I love reading all the various “takes” on the vampire mythos. For myself, I took the elements that intrigued me and didn’t use the ones that didn’t and that’s how I created the Sweetblood world.

Thanks so much for commenting on Day Two of the blog hop. And good luck!
