So let’s talk Christmas trees!

Ask anyone who knows me, and they’ll tell you that I’m notorious for naming things and giving them a “soul”. I get attached to cars (Right now I drive the Resisty) to computers and yes, to Christmas trees! LOL

The kids & I have always prided ourselves on selecting the ugliest tree at the tree lot and taking it home. We imagine how the hoity-toity perfect pretty trees probably look down on the misshapen trees and taunt them about being the last trees on the lot.

And imagine the ugly tree’s joy as it drives away in the back of the truck, waving goodbye to the pretty trees, excited that it will be decorated and be a real Christmas tree…

Panda, my daughter, names our trees each year, and after Christmas we plant the trees in the back yard. I thought I’d introduce you to some of our Christmases Past…

This is Josiah from last year….


Doesn’t he look happy all decorated??? J Panda had to make him an origami star for the tree topper because his top was so bent… J

And here is Josiah one year later, growing in the backyard with other trees from Christmases past…

He’s still just as crooked as ever! LOL

He’s not decorated yet, but he’s already excited to be a Christmas tree, don’t you think?

And wait until after Christmas when he can join the small forest out back…

 

 

 

 

 

It’s a silly tradition, but as years go by, it’s fun to water the crooked confused trees and see how big they are now, and my kids, who are also big now, remember when they chose little Jethro, and the crazy crack baby bush, *ahem* I mean tree… J

    OH. MY. GOODNESS!!! That is the BEST, WEIRDEST, most FANTASTIC holiday tradition I’ve heard in a very long time!! It takes a very special family to give those poor trees a Christmas home. You do good work, my dear, lol 🙂

      Poor Ken came into our family after this tradition was already started, so while he likes the perfectly shaped Douglas Fir, he’s kind enough to suffer through our poor little ugly trees…

      Secretly I think he notices the way the little trees beam once they’re decorated and doesn’t have the heart to turn them away! LOL

    Okay, I was almost rolling on the floor over your trees. That is too funny! That crack baby tree…OMG! I knew you all were fun people. 🙂

    A silly tradition in my family (which we don’t think is silly, but others probably would) is our adoration for the Partridge Family Christmas Card Christmas album (ask Ken, I’m sure he knows all about it). We listened to that album every year, all season long. My mom still has the album and it’s skips on White Christmas. She taped it for me years ago and I still have the tape with the skip on it. Several years back, I found the CD at a store (thank you, record company, whoever you are) and I bought two copies so I’ll have a back up when I wear out the other one. LOL! My husband asked just this year, when we were listening to it in the car, “Why do you listen to that?” He’ll never understand, but my boys do. They love it as much as I do and I’m SO glad. Just think, 100 years from now, that wonderful 60s Christmas music will still be gracing the players of my descendants. They better, or I’ll come back and haunt them. 😉

      I like the open one gift on Christmas Eve tradition… We used to do that when the kids were little to settle them down, but they caught on to I always had them open pajamas! LOL So they stopped asking for one on CHristmas Eve! LOL

    Adopting ugly trees = perfect! I love it! My boys and I just got our tree a few days ago and we picked the tree that was hidden in the corner, away from view. On the way home, my youngest looked at me and said, “Mom, I’m glad we picked that tree. We saved him from being alone on Christmas cuz no one else probably even saw him in that corner.” 🙂

    Your Christmas trees are too funny. I suppose it makes sense to name them, since you are keeping them all! My Dad goes up north by the family cabin and cuts his own Christmas tree, he isn’t looking for the ugliest, but manages to bring it back home just the same. We always get a kick out of going over to my parents house to see what Dad got this time. My kids just laugh and Dad laughs right along with them! Last years tree, we could see right through and Mom had some major issues hanging ornaments on it because the branches were too flimsy.

    Did you or kids come up with the tree tradition after watching A Charlie Brown Christmas? We don’t do much for the holidays any more, but when I was a kid we would have an antipasto out on the table and one would nibble all day. We kids weren’t as fond of this as my parents, so my mom started setting out a crock pot with sloppy joe meat and buns. Yum!

      Yes, the kids started choosing ugly trees after Charlie Brown’s Christmas special. His tree was so happy after they decorated it, and we started looking for a tree that no one else might pick so we could make it happy… 🙂

    What a funny idea to get the Charlie Brown tree in the lot. They do look cute decorated. I have a fake tree because I put my tree up a day or two before Thanksgiving to enjoy it for a long time. My kids are 5 & 10 so we have our chinese food & A Christmas Story tradition & they love it . Happy Holidays.—Rachel

    This blog post had me laughing out loud. My family also tries to pick out the homeliest tree in the lot, but we haven’t named them yet. I think I smell a new family tradition brewing!!! Last year, the bend in the tree trunk was so stark that we couldn’t put a topper on it. And we always turn the bald spot out. That’s a must.

    So far, this is my favorite blog post of the season. thanks for making me smile!

    Your trees are a trip! Like my mom’s. She always gets a “Charlie Brown” Christmas tree because the poor thing ends up on the floor most of the time anyway because the cats can’t resist climbing in it.
    I don’t really have anything special along the Christmas tradition line but I can tell you about working in Disney World’s Magic Kingdom during the holidays. Remember how I told you I didn’t get off until around 2:30-3 am and would walk around main street after everyone was gone? At Christmas it was even more special when all the guests were gone with all the Christmas decorations and the huge, ginormous Christmas tree in front of the Castle. Some of the ornaments seemed like they were darn near as tall as my 5’5″. Walking around that way, at that time of the morning made you feel like Santa was really watching over you and you could almost hear the elves working hard in the shop making those toys.

    Love those trees, Lisa.
    One year my kids came home with my husband after getting our tree. My oldest, who was about 7, ran in saying, “Hey Mom! Dad bought a scorched tree!”

    I was not sure what he meant, but then saw this big white fluffy thing come through the door.

    I made sure my husband knew if he ever wanted to get any for the rest of his life, never to bring home a flocked tree again. I think we’re still finding the fuzz now 20 years later!

    Oh gracious! Those trees are precious. They remind me of the toys on the Island of Misfit Toys from Rudolph! And I love how you plant them in the back yard and have so many wonderful Christmas memories associated with each one. That’s a great tradition!

    My dad passed away suddenly seven years ago today. Needless to say, that was a heartbreaking Christmas. We bought a beautiful, round bejeweled crimson Christmas ornament that opens in the middle like a treasure box. Each year, everyone in the family writes a goal for the next year on a slip of paper and puts it inside the ornament, being inspired by the memory of my dad to reach that goal. It keeps us connected to him in a very positive way. We sure miss him!

    Let me start off by saying that each and every one of those tree’s are beautiful in there own way. And you and your family made them even more special by choosing them for your home on one of the most important holiday’s. A true blessing!!
    I would have to say that my silliest Christmas tradition would be, that I collect the Snowflake Teddy Bears each and every year and sit them all out at Christmas time. My children think its crazy, but my grandbabies love them, because I do let them play with them. I just do not think it is right to put something out that attracts the attention of my grandbabies that they can not touch. So each year they have fun coming to my house and playing with all of the Teddy Bears.

    What a wonderfully fabulous Christmas tradition, Lisa. I don’t think I’ve know anyone who named their trees, lol.

    Maybe the weirdest tradition is we always watch The Christmas Story when we decorate our tree. It feels like we’ve seen this movie a million times already, but it always makes us laugh.

    I love the Charlie Brown Christmas trees. 🙂 I usually have the kids decorate a fake one in their playroom. It is full of artwork and paper chains.

    How cool that your family rescues the sad & ugly trees, lifts their spirits by decking them in lights & then gives them a new home in the backyard. I just can just hear those ugly duckling trees yelling taunts back to the “pretty” trees, as you drive away from the tree lot. Yeah to Panda for thinking up such fun names for them, especially “crack baby tree”. lol

    I don’t know how silly you’ll think it is, but when I moved out on my own, I decided that I was going to have a theme Christmas tree & only bought what I call “critter” ornaments. I have cats, dogs, reindeer, bears, mice, penguins, cardinals, etc. No plain old glass balls, stars or bells on my tree & I only use white lights. Every year I pick up at least one new ornament.

    My folks tree has developed it’s own theme. I’ve bought them a bunch of train & old VW Beetle ornaments, because my dad has train he sets up to run around the living room during the holidays & our family business sells parts for the old “Herbie” type VW’s.

    We usually buy an ornament or two to remind us of something big that happened throughout the year. This year was a Hallmark “New House” ornament since I am a first time homebuyer! Yea, it’s been a good year 🙂

    Our tradition is that we cannot drink egg nogg before decorating the tree. We will put on Christmas music, pour us some egg nogg, and off we go decorating. (shh. I cheated this year) The tree went up too late. lol

    What a fun tradition you have! We don’t get live trees, but i would definitely name them, too, if we did. I also didn’t know you could plant a tree after it had been cut. How wonderful to have those memories every time you look out the window.

      Our trees aren’t cut, they’re still alive in a pot and we plant them after New Years… 🙂

    I think all of your misfit trees have personality. I love the names too. I don’t have any wacky Christmas traditions. I do have to watch Mickey’s Christmas Carol every year. It brings back great memories of when I was a kid.

    Your trees remind me of a Charlie Brown Christmas tree, they do have character. The only funny tradition we used to do was re-gifting the same gift over and over again every year. It was one of those tacky plaster fish and bubble sets that used to be in bathrooms way back when. They were given to me one year and my brother made such fun of them that I saved them and gave them to him the next year. Then I would get them the following year and so forth. That is until my sister-in-law broke them. I was so mad at her, you can’t find them anywhere. I even tried going to a ceramics store to see if they could make me some and she knew exactly what I was talking about but the pattern had been discontinued. Those were good times.

    Lisa – I name just about everything ELSE but the Christmas trees. It’s too sad to see them go. I have a couple living trees planted in the yard, but every time I plant one, I have to hire a sprinkler guy to redo the system.!! Eeek! So I just call them all “Tree,” and let it go at that. But – confession – I have to have my hubby take it away while I;m not here. Just tooooo sad.

    Okay, you officially have the COOLEST tradition ever!! I wish I had room in my back yard to plant a bunch of “ugly” trees. LOL

    Our silly Christmas tradition is to wear ridiculous holiday hats on Christmas day. Amazingly, even my husband will participate in this….kids love it! I have a “tree” hat, my kids wear different elf hats & hubby has a camo hat with light-up antlers on it! We’re kind of excited because our son has grown so much in the last year, we have to buy a new hat for him. So, the hunt is on for something really ridiculous! 🙂

    My son went to daycare when he was 4 years old and made a Santa face of a half empty bottle of javel with red and white wool poked through holes to make the hat, beard ; black for the eyes. Each year and he is now 29, we put it in our entryway where all the visitors v=can see it.

    That has to be THE coolest Christmas tradition I have ever heard!! I love it!! We don’t name our tree, because we have the same artificial one every year, but if we did, I’d have to call it “Cat Bait” since our cat just HAS to attack it lol.

    Hi Lisa,
    thank you for the chance at such a great giveaway, i love all of your trees. i think the closest my family comes to a Christmas tree tradition is that we put it up the day after Thanksgiving. we have a pretty crowded house here with 3 different families living together for the last few years and we all have our own decorations. we always try and let everyone put the decorations that are most important to them on the tree and then those that are left over my sister and mother take to work and use there. 🙂

    My first response was to say NO I have never named a Christmas tree but then I realized that a number of years ago we found a tree that was actually two trees but then had grown together to make a gorgeous and big tree and we called it the DoubleTree and every sense then when we talk about our favorite tree and I say the doubletree everyone knows which one I mean… (it was a pain to get it into a stand let me tell you)

    Hey Lisa!! I love your Christmas tradition!! I have always though it so cruel to cut down trees for a month just to spruce up the house. I understand tradition but trees are alive too and so I have an artifical one! My Christmas tradition is to always, (no matter how tight money is), adopt at least one child for Christmas. I have every year since I turned 18 and that was a long time ago!!

    Lol, My family always bought real trees and planted them too! Althogh my Dad did the choosing and choose pretty ones, Now there are 2 rows of trees beside my partens house. The first tree they bouth (in 78 I think) is huge, taller than the 2 story house and about 15+ feet wide at the bottom. They make a very good wind break. I hope you have a very happy holiday!
